Should You Winterize Your Fence?

A lot of people understand how important it is to winterize their air conditioning and heating unit, as well as many other appliances in their home. But, did you know that you should also make sure your fence is ready to handle the winter weather? As fence contractors in Bucks County, PA, we know that winter snowstorms and rain can have an impact on your fencing. Therefore, to help you find yourself less likely to replace your fencing once springtime comes once more—here are a few things to keep in mind:

If you have wood fencing, it is important to protect against and/or remove dry rot.

There is no denying that it (usually) rains at all times of the year. So, there is also the chance that your fence may already have dry rot. If it does, you should remove the dry rot as best as you can and then clean the rest of the area with watered down bleach. When done, it is wise to repaint or prime the whole fence. Inevitably, guaranteeing your wooden fence lasts through the winter is by eradicating any dry rot.

Even though metal fencing requires little maintenance, it is not totally impervious.

If you find that the coating is wearing off on a powder-coated aluminum fence, it is important to fix it immediately. If you leave it alone, the exposed metal has the potential to rust over the winter.

In the case that you find rust on a steel or iron fence—it needs to be repainted.

When you find rust, it needs to be removed using a stiff metal brush. Once that is done, you can wash the fence, prime it, and then paint it again.

It is important to ensure fences remain in good condition so that they do their job – protect your home and you, as well as help you maintain your privacy. If you feel like any of the above needs to be addressed, please feel free to call us at any time.
